Reflections on the emotional experiences that shape our lives, relationships, and sense of self.
Why People Come to Therapy
Many people imagine that therapy is something we seek only when life has become unbearable. We tend to associate it with crisis, with relationships that are breaking down, anxiety that has become overwhelming, or grief that has brought everything to a standstill. While therapy can certainly be helpful during those times, they are not the only reasons people reach out.
In my experience, people often come to therapy because something simply does not feel right. They may find themselves exhausted more often than they used to be, struggling in their relationships, or carrying a sense that they are stuck without fully understanding why. Sometimes there is no single event that brings them to therapy. Instead, there is a growing awareness that carrying on in the same way is no longer working.
One of the most common concerns people bring to a first conversation is the feeling that they should have a better reason for being there. They worry that their difficulties are not serious enough, that others have it worse, or that they ought to be coping more effectively on their own. There can be an unspoken belief that therapy is reserved for those who have reached a breaking point.
